On the 29th November 1948 history was made with the official launch of the first Holden, the 48-215, Australia’s first car. Prior to this launch, the Holden Company were body and coach builders, building bodies for imported chassis for other manufacturers. The 48-215 was Holden’s first fully produced car under their company General Motors Holden.
Restoration of the 48-215, commonly nicknamed the FX, started in the late 70’s. These models are still being restored today by people of all ages. As each Model became a classic, the demand for restoration grew.
I caught the restoration bug in 1994 at the young age of 13. I had to have an FC Holden to restore. But it didn’t stop there; today my collection has grown to include the first 4 model Holdens: the FX, FJ (Sedan & Ute), FC and a HR. I’ve also managed to collect a FC Wagon, Van & Sedan and Ute.
I’ve decided to put together a website called Australiasownccar.com: Collecting the first four Holdens. This site is a gallery of my private collection.
My mission is to have the first 4 Holden models and the first high performance model, in top restored condition so that I can alternate the cars between shows.
All Holdens have a pride of place in Australia and deserve to be shown off as Australia’s own car.
When having a hobby like this, whether one car or many, I’ve found it great value to be involved in a car club; it also brings a social aspect to the hobby, where you develop friendships with others with similar interests.
Restoration tip:
The web can be a great source of information for your restoration needs; I’ve found that the web has greatly assisted me in my current restoration projects.
Over the years we have attended a variety of shows with the cars, as far south as Melbourne, as far west as Loxton in SA, Canberra (ACT), Shepparton (Victoria) (FX FJ Nationals along with a annual rally in Wangaratta and Victorian FX/FJ State Titles at varies location across Victoria.
